Augmentin (amoxicillin trihydrate/potassium clavulanate) is an antibiotic similar to penicillin, used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria which are susceptible to the medication.

A Potent Antibiotic

Getting the Most from Augmentin

Note that because this product contains two medications, two strengths are given; for example, 500 mg amoxicillin and 125 mg clavulanate (500/125). It's important to pay attention to both of these numbers; note that the tablet with 250 mg amoxicillin also contains 125 mg clavulanate. Therefore taking two 250 mg tablets to achieve a 500 mg dose of amoxicillin would result in a double dose of 250 mg clavulanate. Check carefully before you buy Augmentin to ensure the correct dosage strengths of both ingredients.

Dosage and duration of treatment may vary slightly depending on the type and severity of the infection. However, in otherwise healthy adults, treatment is roughly similar:

• Most patients are prescribed 250/125 mg amoxicillin/clavulanate every 8 hours or 500/125 mg every 12 hours.
• For severe infections or respiratory infections, 500/125 mg may be taken every 8 hours.
• Taking with food is encouraged to reduce side effects of nausea, vomiting or abdominal discomfort.
• Treatment may last for 8 to 14 days, with 10 days being the most common.
• Continue taking the medication for the full period it was prescribed; stopping early can result in a resurgence of the infection, as well as contribute to resistant bacteria.

Do not buy Augmentin to treat infections in children until speaking with a doctor about the correct dosage; dosages can vary tremendously in children depending on age, weight and other factors. An improper dose greatly increases risk of side effects.

• Diagnosed with mononucleosis
